Dear Violin Shop Community,

We're back from our trip from Cremona, Italy, and we can't wait to share more details of our trip with you.
We hope you enjoy this 4-minute video of the highlights of our trip. More to come!

With love,

We specialize in all sizes of violins, violas and cellos. Our sales and rentals are backed by our world class workshop.

Sales, Rentals, Lessons & Repairs

Violins, Violas, Cellos, Bows and Accessories

The Violin Shop works by appointment to ensure that we can meet each client's needs to the best of our ability with undivided attention.
Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have or to schedule an appointment to try-out any of our instruments.

Learning to play a stringed instrument is a challenging endeavor. Quality instruments with the correct setup will make a substantial difference in a beginner’s ability to develop strong fundamental technique. Set-up includes planing the fingerboard, fitting the pegs, acoustically cutting the bridge, fitting the sound post, and installing top quality strings on a Whittner tailpiece that has four built-in fine tuners.

For starters, pick up and hold an instrument by the neck. That's its handle. You avoid putting fingerprints all over the varnish. Wipe the perspiration and rosin off your instrument, strings and bow each time after playing. Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Read Kevin's articles Inside-the-Shop for additional information.

Kevin Smith is a Luthier and his handcrafted violins and violas are crafted with an understanding of the instrument, its voice, and the musician. His unique blend of skill and experience create an instrument that feels like a seamless extension of the player, allowing a passionate musician to experience a dynamic range of sound intuitively.

In 2008, Kevin completed two 16 1/8" Tertis model violas. Each instrument was tailored to fit the demanding requirements of accomplished musicians. He has recently completed a Del Gesu model violin. To try this instrument or one of his recent violas please let us know.

Kevin brings a lifetime of experience to The Violin Shop. He received his Luthier degree from The Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1976. He went on to continue his violin, viola and cello education at William Moennig & Son in Philadelphia where he trained with Robert Cauer for over 2 years. From there he went on to train under Roland Feller in San Francisco for an additional 2 years. Kevin has been in the business of building custom made violins and violas as well as restoring and repairing instruments and bows since 1972.

About Us

Dear Violin Shop Community,

My husband Shane and I are excited to announce that we will be the new owners of The Violin Shop San Diego as of April 20th 2021.

We celebrate and thank Paula and Kevin for their years of commitment to the string culture in San Diego.

Their vision for a San Diego Violin Shop has cultivated a thriving community of students, teachers, and musicians that we feel so honored to now embrace as the new owners.

A smooth and seamless transition is priority for all of us as we continue to ensure the quality of our string instruments.

We look forward to supporting our local teachers as they continue the hard work of mentoring our future orchestra leaders.

We are committed to working with community organizers to ensure music education and opportunity continue to thrive.

Please visit us at our new location in Encinitas opening soon. We hope you all stay connected for further introductions and updates in the near future.

Strings are expensive, no getting around it. Odds are you've checked out a few of the on-line string sellers and have purchased strings from them. But there are times when it simply isn't convenient, or even wise. For instance, if you have difficulty putting strings on yourself, you can buy them from us and Kevin will professionally install them without charge. So in an effort to balance the need of having them in your hands now and better pricing, we're taking 30% off all our strings!
